Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a hidden condition--it shows no external signs of its presence.  Consequently, others are less apt to recognize the problem and respond with patience and understanding.  Hearing is important in every aspect of our lives.  As and adult, it allows us to enjoy our family and friends, to perform well on the job, follow conversations easily and keep us abreast of current happenings.  Symptoms of hearing loss may include:

• Asking others to repeat
• Feeling that everyone mumbles
• Turning the TV or radio up louder

The adult with a hearing loss may become withdrawn because he feels left out of conversations.  This may place undue stress on personal relations.  When a child has a hearing problem, his speech and language skills may be slow to develop.  His speech may be unintelligible or he may have academic problems.  The problems associated with hearing loss in young children can often be alleviated by early detection and prompt medical treatment.

Evaluation

The first step in rehabilitation of the hearing impaired is a complete audiological evaluation by a Doctor of Audiology to determine if the loss can be effectively treated medically, surgically, or with the use of amplification.
